“The Visit”
This series examines the relationships we can have with sacred spaces. I photographed tourists in the moments before they entered a 17th century church. The rectangular opening in the darkness brings to mind the aperture of a camera obscura. What thoughts and feelings from outside are projected onto the interior of a religious edifice? In visiting a church, we take part in a ritual of reverence and consumption, as we are temporarily transported by the age and particularities of the space, as well as by our own experiences with spirituality.
